This fall, I joined the University of Alabama’s Program in Sports Communication’s roundtable on athletes and social justice. I’m grateful for my fellow panelists and the range of experiences and perspectives they brought to the table.
In May, I had the honor of joining a fantastic panel to discuss the politics of play in the midst of pandemic. Huge thanks for Dr. Michael Butterworth and the good folks at the Center for Sports Communication and Media at The University of Texas for including me in a super important conversation on sporting labor.
I was part of a fantastic panel planned for Australian greatness this May. Unfortunately, the pandemic had other ideas. We taped our roundtable for the International Communication Association’s virtual conference instead. If you burn some coffee (shoutout to that hotel hallway cup of joe) and make a nametag, it’s almost like you’re there!
I recently gave a talk on advanced analytics in sport for the University of Oregon Museum of Natural and Cultural History’s Ideas On Tap speaker series. Usually held at a local pub, we made it happen virtually with beer in tow!
I had the amazing opportunity to chat with Dr. Amira Rose Davis (who I adore) on one of my favorite sports podcasts Burn It All Down. We talked about Kaepernick’s workout, as well as the social media and mainstream media reaction. We also had a chance to talk about the role of women (athletes, academics, intellectuals) in sport, whether their voicing their opinions on air or traveling to play the sport they love. You can check out the interview here.
I had the pleasure of talking shop with Paul Peppis, director of the Oregon Humanities Center, about my current research as well as the recent rumblings in the NCAA. I also wore a shirt declaring my love for the eternally amazing Doris Burke.
